It's always refreshing to mix things up and have a change of pace, or even more exciting to the photographer, a change of scenery... to really get the creative juices flowing. I wish I had had more time to commit to a project or 'exercise' while I was away, but regardless, it was a welcomed and much needed break. My cats wouldn't agree at all as they stay home and have the house to themselves. They don't much like my short disappearances. Despite the daily, and sometimes, torrential rain it was a pleasure to see so much green and even the grey.
We didn't have a rigid schedule but we still got a lot accomplished. I think if you have your main objectives in mind, even when it comes to what you would like to photograph while away, you can do so much more than if you departed without a clue. It doesn't mean you have to become uber regimented but have an idea of what you expect to see when you arrive; what is popular and in season; what you have seen pictures of (the pros know what to shoot while they are there and now so will you).
I think a little forethought and the right items packed you can turn a brief jaunt or a week at conferences into a solid photo opportunity for yourself :)
